Australian businesses getting online… slowly!

While more Australian businesses are getting online to promote and sell their services and products, there are still many that are stuck in the 20th century. The findings come from the latest survey of Australian business’ online habits by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Key findings include:

  • There are still some businesses without Internet access (8.8% – I thought everyone had a smartphone these days!).
  • Less than half of Australian businesses have an online presence, such as a website, eBay store or social media page (43.1%).
  • The proportion of businesses taking orders online has risen but is still only 28%.

The ABS concludes that: “While more Australian businesses are engaging in the digital economy, the relatively slow growth in these key indicators from last year’s survey results suggests we still have quite a way to go. With online retail spending growing at a much faster pace than traditional retail spending and more Australians using smart phones and tablet devices to make purchases , a lot of businesses that don’t harness the opportunities offered online could fail to reach their full potential.”

Couldn’t have put it better myself!
